To all interns registered for the upcoming ExAC

Please see below for final direction ahead of the exams next week, as it pertains to the National Building Code section of the ExAC on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2021. As a reminder, you may only use a hard-copy, paper version of the 2015 NBC (the original of which was either purchased from the NRC or the free, printable offline and downloadable PDF – also available from the NRC – that has been printed out and enclosed in binders).

- You must keep your version of the NBC to two books or binders. The exam proctors have been informed that the NBC comes as a set of two books or binders, and will not be able to validate any additional binders. This means that you will not be able to, for instance, separate out the Index from the rest of the code in a third binder. You are still allowed to re-arrange the contents of your copy of the NBC prior to the ExAC.

- If you print out the PDF of the NBC from the NRC this must be contained in binders – no loose stacks of pages will be permitted at the exam.

- Removing pages from your copy of the NBC during the exam is prohibited. Removing pages during the exam presents exam security difficulties that might otherwise slow down your exam taking experience if, for example, your exam space must be rescanned after a bathroom break.

- Paperclips/binder clips are permitted as a means of quickly marking a page when flipping back and forth through the NBC. You are not permitted to use pens or other writing implements to hold pages for you during the exam.

Please be advised that interns are required to be seated during the exam(s). The use of a standing desk in the standing position is not permitted.

A final note to remind everyone time spent re-securing your exam space (re-scanning the room, for instance after a washroom break) once the exam has started is part of your exam time. Please endeavour to follow your proctor’s directions to minimize these disruptions.

Latest Updates & Details on the Upcoming ExAC

The Committee for the ExAC can provide the following update regarding the online ExAC to assist Interns in preparing for their ExAC session(s) scheduled for February 22 to 25, 2021.

Accessing the NBC: Interns can access an offline downloadable PDF of the 2015 NBC. This PDF is printable however printing comes with restrictions which are determined by the National Research Council. Interns have the responsibility to make sure their paper format of the 2015 NBC (including a NRC authorized printed pdf copy) does not contravene the Canadian Copyright Act. Interns should contact the National Research Council with any questions about accessing this document.

Power/internet connectivity issues on exam day: If you experience power or internet disruptions during the exam, you will be allowed time to try to reconnect. Downtime due to power/internet disruptions does not count against your examination time for that section. Interns may have a home phone or cell phone in the room with them but face down and not easily accessible, in case you need to contact technical support during the exam. If you bring a phone into the testing environment, your proctor will ask to see it before the exam can begin. If you lose connection and have to reconnect, you will be asked to rescan your test environment before you will be permitted to continue.

Internet Speed & Reliability Requirements: A reliable internet connection will be important for your success at the ExAC. Remote proctors rely on consistent connectivity as a means of ensuring exam security. If after testing your connectivity you are concerned that you might not be able to sustain a reliable connection, you should consider an alternate exam location. If you have not already done so, please be sure to access the Test Taker Resource Centre (https://www.proctoru.com/live-plus-resource-center#system) for the minimum technical requirements and the FAQ.

Your exam environment: Many people have transitioned to full-time working and learning from home. Interns should arrange for a quiet, secluded space to attempt the ExAC however we acknowledge that this may not be 100% possible for some people. Please be advised that interns will not be penalized if pets or small children (under 10) happen to appear during the exam, or if another person in the household were to pass by in the background. The proctor will make note of this but will not otherwise intervene unless an obvious breach is occurring. Others in the exam space should not make any attempt to communicate with you during your examination. Ideally you should do your best to ensure that no one else is in the room and prepare in advance to ensure there are no distractions.

Drawing/sketching/note-taking during the examsSecurity measures for this remote electronic exam mean that use of pen or pencil, and paper is not permitted during the exam. There are built-in calculator and notepad tools as part of the online platform, and can be experienced in advance by accessing the exam tutorial. The Committee for the ExAC understands that sketching by hand is a common problem-solving method and would like to reassure you that drawn solutions are not part of the required answers for this exam.

Preparation Guide for the Online ExAC: The Preparation Guide for the Online ExAC is now available on the ExAC Website. If you have not already done so, please refer to this document for more information about the upcoming administration of the ExAC.

The Committee for the Examination for Architects in Canada

January 19, 2021

The Committee for the ExAC (CExAC) can now provide details regarding the online ExAC to assist Interns in preparing for their ExAC session(s) scheduled for February 22 to 25, 2021.

Booking the Exam through the Yardstick Platform

Between 8AM EST on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 and midnight EST on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, all Interns must register on the YAS MeasureTM platform to create their user account and book their exam(s) through the platform. Instructions will be emailed by Wednesday, January 20, 2021.

ExAC Schedule

Each day’s exam unlocks at 10AM EST. Please note that due to system requirements for the online proctoring system, interns will be admitted to their exam in blocks, based on the exam start time chosen when booking through the YAS MeasureTM platform. You will have three hours to complete each exam section from your scheduled starting time block. Interns planning to write the ExAC from outside of the Eastern Standard Time Zone will need to take into account the difference in time zones.

Exam Environment

The online ExAC can be taken from a secure location of your choice (home, office, other place), but you are expected to make the necessary arrangements to be alone and uninterrupted for the full duration of each exam section.

Technical Requirements

The following equipment is required on your exam days:

  • A computer with integrated keyboard, webcam and microphone, or a computer with a wired/wireless external keyboard, webcam and microphone;
  • An external keyboard and mouse/trackpad (for desktop computers or laptops);
  • A stable internet connection (wired is recommended or wireless; if you choose to use a wireless internet connection, we recommend a speed of at least 10 Mbps).

Only one screen, of any size, is allowed during the exam. If you are connecting an external monitor to a laptop, the laptop screen must be closed. In this case, you will not be able to use the built-in webcam and microphone. You will need to connect a separate external webcam and microphone to enable monitoring by the remote proctor.

Testing Your Equipment

We strongly advise you to test your equipment as soon as possible to ensure everything works well on exam days. A link to the system test will be available once you have booked your exam time(s) through Yardstick (YAS).

Exam Tutorial

A tutorial (practice exam) will be available on the YAS MeasureTM platform once your booking is completed. The tutorial will allow you to familiarize yourself with the platform and its features. Questions have been created to enable you to interact with platform on an unlimited basis. We encourage you to practice as many times as you need.

Online ExAC features

The online ExAC will be entirely digital. The exam platform provides features such as question bookmarking, page and text size enlargement, text highlighting, a digital calculator and a notepad. Examinees are prohibited from using any physical tools (pencils, pens, calculators, et cetera) during the exams. The only exception is for individuals writing Section 2, in which case they must use a paper format of the 2015 National Building Code, without the provincial adaptations. Electronic or printed pdf copies of the Building Code are not permitted.

Remote Proctoring

The online ExAC will be remotely proctored through the YAS ProctorU platform. Find out more about the remote proctoring experience

Preparation Guide

An updated and revised version of the ExAC Preparation Guide complete with a FAQ section will be available by the end of January. This document will provide additional details about the online experience.

Special Accommodations

Interns who need a Special Accommodation due to the change of delivery of the ExAC may submit an official request to the CExAC by January 27, 2021.

Cancellation of Registration

Cancellations will be accepted up to one week from the start of the first exam section. The usual cancellation fees will apply.

Letters of Authorization

In past years, ExAC registrants would receive a Letter of Authorization from their licensing authority. For the February sitting of the ExAC, interns should consider the email confirmations of their exam booking to be their authorization letters. These emails will confirm the date, time and language of your examination.
