Information for Interns registered for the 2020 Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC)

As we work through details related to holding the ExAC, we would like to address questions that have come up since the announcement of the exam postponement.

1) New timeline: While we don’t yet have new exam dates, the National Committee for the ExAC (CExAC) can confirm that the ExAC will be held as early as early February and by the end of March 2021 at the latest. The method of delivery has yet to be determined.

2) Notification: Interns will be given a minimum of two-months advance notice of the new exam dates. This should allow sufficient time for planning time off, reorganizing schedules, or changing travel plans.

3) Existing Registrations: All interns registered for the 2020 ExAC will automatically have their existing registration moved to the new exam dates.

4) Cancellations: Once new exam dates are announced interns will be permitted a 6-week window from the time of the announcement to cancel their existing registration without penalty if the cancellation is due to a conflict with the intern’s existing schedule.

5) Refunds: Cancellations in these circumstances will be entitled to a full refund.

In addition to these details, and in response to feedback received following the announcement, the CExAC wishes to address several specific concerns.

• As organizations, CExAC and the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA) have the moral and civic obligation to follow and adapt to the evolving and increasingly restrictive public health measures. We all must contribute in the best way we can to avoid or create contamination in our communities. CExAC and CALA are highly committed to the safety of every intern, invigilator, and staff person that participate in the exam.

• We are living in unprecedented times. Over the past six months we have all needed to continuously adapt to the changing circumstances of the pandemic. The decision to postpone the ExAC was very difficult to make, but necessary. CExAC and CALA are committed to making sure this component of the path to licensure is disrupted or delayed as little as possible and are actively working on a workable solution.

• The CExAC has been investigating for some time the possibility of moving the ExAC to a computer-based or online solution. As professionals, whether we are interns or architects, we know such complex processes are not easy or quick to accomplish.

• However, before deciding to move forward with an online exam, the CExAC has the organizational, professional and moral responsibility to perform due diligence: analyzing all the risks involved, making sure that the solution is secure, robust and proven. A future online ExAC should maintain the same characteristics and format as the paper-based exam, and be able to be administered on the same days to all interns across Canada. In the end, the current and future generations of interns will benefit from a renewed, and modernized licensing exam.

• Again, the CExAC, along with the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities, are committed to the over 800 Canadian interns registered for the next exam session, to establishing a new date for the exam administration of the ExAC as quickly as possible, along with a viable method of delivery.

We thank everyone for their feedback and patience. Please watch for further updates and communication.

Important Information for Interns registered for the 2020 Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC)

The Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities and the National Committee for the ExAC (CExAC) have been closely monitoring the volatile pandemic situation and its impact across Canada. As a national exam, all jurisdictions must be able to safely hold the ExAC simultaneously for it to proceed.

After much consideration and discussion, the decision has been made to postpone the 2020 ExAC session scheduled for November 2 & 3.

It is with regret that this message is delivered, however the continued and growing uncertainly around a second wave of the COVID 19 pandemic, coupled with our responsibility to comply with the requirements of all the provincial and territorial health authorities having jurisdiction, has made this decision necessary.

We understand that the examination is a key component to the registration process and our responsibility as regulators to deliver the licensing exam. Accordingly, the CExAC, along with the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities have committed to establishing a new date for the exam administration of the ExAC as quickly as possible, along with a viable method of delivery.

The health and safety of every intern, invigilator and staff person that is necessary to administer an in-person exam is our primary concern, which must be balanced with the need to ensure, as best as possible, that this component of your path to licensure is disrupted or delayed as little as possible. As such, the CExAC is reviewing alternate options for exam delivery, including the move to an online exam.

As noted above, interns registered to sit the November exam will be informed of the new dates as soon as possible. We hope that the exam timing format – one sitting of each of the four ExAC sections over two days – will be maintained. Interns with a Special Accommodation request will be contacted individually by their jurisdiction with follow-up on the status of their request.

We will be back in contact with you as quickly as possible with further information.
If you have questions, please direct them to the ExAC Administrator for your licensing authority.
